Head-On Collision Kills Mercersburg Solider, Chambersburg Man, State Police Say

A head-on collision has killed two people and sent another to an area hospital, according to a release by Pennsylvania state police on Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Richard E. Cowan, 69, of Chambersburg, drove his 2015 Ford Transit over the center turning lane in the 8100 block of US 30/Lincoln Way slamming head-on into a 2019 Hyundai Accent, driven Maura J. Boyce, 42, of Mercersburg, just east of Campbell’s Run Road, St. Thomas Township on Monday, Feb. 6, around 2 p.m., police detailed in the release. 

Cowan and Boyce died at the scene and Cowan's passenger, Mark E. Schwartz, 63, of Williamsport, MD, was taken to Fulton County Medical Center in McConnellsburg with suspected minor injuries, police said

In addition to state police, two helicopters, Life Net 8-1 and Life Lion, responded along with fire and EMS personnel from MMP&W, St. Thomas, Chambersburg, and WellSpan, area fire police, and the Franklin County Coroner’s Office.

Details about Cowan were not immediately available. Boyce was a member of the 336 MP battalion and was a 92 Alpha (Automated Logistical Specialist) at the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), as well as a Sergeant First Class/SFC with the U.S. Army, according to her social media. She previously studied Business & Finance at the University of Phoenix and went to McKeesport Area High School. Boyce was born and raised in McKeesport. She is survived by her children, "Above anything else, I love being a mom! My children are my world!," her Facebook bio reads. 

Memorial and funeral service details have yet to be released.
